S1 Common Course Outline
The S1/S2 Common Course is set out to allow each individual teacher a certain amount of freedom to develop lessons within the 5-14 curriculum while at the same time following elements of a set course which is employed by the department as a whole.
Within the S1/S2 Common Course, there are 6 units, 4 of which must be followed by the class teacher.
The units are set in such a way to provide each pupil with a coherent move from S1 to S2 andon to Standard Grade where previous knowledge is a key feature in developing new skills and raising attainment.
Each unit should have a duration of approximately 10 weeks and shall incorporate pupil and teacher evaluation for the purpose of quality assurance.
Ideally, at least one unit should be completed before pupil reports are due, as this willl allow for internal moderation where a consistent and effective marking scheme shall be employed.
I feel that this is a healthy way to approach the S1/S2 curriculum due to the very nature of our subject where creativity and inventiveness are to be encouraged. With quality assurance and working with the Quality Indicators throughout our profiling and moderation we shall maintain and develop further our S1/S2 curriculum to meet the needs of today's pupils.
When planning the Common Course and additional lessons it is important to ensure that through the course of a pupils 2 years, he or she shall have a wide and varied experience of materials and skills within the Art & Design Department.
To this end, each teacher shall also have a yearly glance sheet for each class, which will have an insight into what has been done by each
class. This shall be backed up by a more detailed lesson plan.
