The course is for all pupils and consists of three units of approximately the same length and must take account of the need for external exam preperation. All units will be devoted to specific units of study devised by the Art & Design Department.
The units that make up the course should reflect the pupils' daily lives and experiences. This content should be thought of as covering three broad areas:-
The environment (man-made and natural).
Communication and the media.
Cultural heritage (social and historical).
COURSE STRUCTURE
The course will have four units concerned with specific areas of study which come within the specific context. In each of the two years there should be :-
one unit concerned with Expressive Activity
one unit concerned with Design Activity
Time must be set aside for a small induction unit
teaching of information retrieval skills
additional time for all units
flexible time for unforseen delays
Extra time for external exam preparation.
ACTIVITIES
There are three prescribed activities :-
Expressive
Design
Critical
Each activity should be either Expressive or Design. The Critical Activity is not a separate unit but is done within the other two activities and is supportive to them. Critical work is of equal standing to the other activities.
Expressive Activity
Expressive work can be compared to work which is traditionally labelled as Fine Art. It is mainly concerned with the study of, and the creating of personal work which conveys feelings, thoughts and ideas.
The work should provide experience and knowedge in :-
Investigative skills.
Understanding and responding in a personal way to stimuli.
Experiencing and understanding the possibilities of various media.
Conveying information in an expressive format.
Design Activity
Design work can be compared to work which is traditionally called Applied Art. That is, work which has a practical function other than being a personal statement. It is mainly concerned with:-
Identifying problems and finding a solution.
Acquiring skills in the uses of materials and processes.
Understanding the design process.
The use of the Design Process is a compulsory part of Design Activity. The Design Process is intended to give a logical and easily followed structure and way of working for pupils attempting to solve a Design Brief.
It provides evidence for assessment.
The Design Process to be followed is:-
Research and investigation of a brief.
Consideration of different possibilities.
Production of an example/or communicating a solution.(Added Value Unit)
Evaluation of the results.
The Design Process may not, in practice, rigidly follow a strict format, but evidence for assessment must illustrate all phases of the Design Process.
The model of research - consideration - production - evaluation will also be successfully applied to the Expressive Activity.
Critical Activity
Critical Activity can be compared with the type of work called Research. It is the process of finding out about the wider aspects of the Activity being tackled.
It will bring to the Activity information which will broaden a pupil's understanding of the Activity beyond the simple practice of a pre-determined format.
It will allow the pupils to develop a deeper personal insight into areas other than those of practical production.
It will encourage the use of and teach the importance of information skills such as identifying, investigating, selecting and collating information.
Finally, Critical Activity work will lead the pupil to make and communicate judgements on a variety of sources of interest.
